Types of markets – Commodity exchange

Commodities

Commodities are one of the oldest forms of trade in the world. For decades, they have also been present in financial markets, with various financial instruments linked to them. The variety of commodities traded in financial markets is enormous.

Metals
Metals are among the most valuable and widely traded resources in the world. They play a key role both in industry and in financial markets. From precious metals such as gold and silver, which often serve as protection against inflation, to industrial metals like platinum, they are an essential part of the global economy.

Financial instruments related to metals include futures, options, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which allow investors to benefit from price movements.

Grains
Grains are a fundamental food resource and are critically important for global food security. They are used both for direct human consumption and as animal feed, as well as a raw material in the bioenergy industry.

In financial markets, grains such as wheat, barley, and corn are among the most actively traded agricultural commodities through specialized exchanges. Their prices are influenced by climate conditions, geopolitical factors, and trade policies.

The table below presents three of the most liquid and actively traded commodities worldwide, divided into main categories – cereals, energy commodities, and metals. These are assets that hold leading positions on international financial markets in terms of trading volume and investment interest.
